No, you are not required to get the insurance. Check your credit card benefits. Sometimes they provide insurance if you use the credit card to rent the vehicle.

No, you aren’t required as the car rental place has their own insurance, but if you don’t get the insurance from them, then you would be on the hook for any damages incurred in a accident or whatever… Some credit cards include rental insurance automatically if you use the card to pay for the rental, but you need to read your credit card agreement for the details.

It depends on the state where you live, but you should carry some kind of insurance. If you have personal auto insurance, alot of times it is transferable to the rental- call your insurance agent and ask. The rental company may not check for your insurance and just ask you to sign a paper agreeing that you have insurance. However if you lie and something happens, you’re SCREWED and will have to pony up the money to pay any car damage that occurs.

no you are not required to purchase the rental coverage , but if you do have an accident the rental car company can and will come after you for the damages including sending you to a collection agency and informing credit agencies

You are required and it also would be an intelligent thing to do. anyone driving around without any type of insurance shouldn’t be able to drive.

Most car rental locations carry liability coverage for their vehicles, so check the one you want to rent from to make sure basic public liability and property damage would be included in your rate. This would not cover damage to the rental car, so as others have stated, you should check to see if you have any coverage for that through your credit card, or you could purchase the ldw or cdw from the car rental company directly.

ABSOLUTELY - If you don;t get it - any little scratch and YOU have to pay the entire repair bill, which will be 10 times higher than you expect it to be

Check with your insurance company. They may offer a non-owners insurance policy for situations like yours.

By law, rental companies must provide the state required amount of liability insurance. Generally, these amounts are low and do not provide much protection. Often the state mandated minimum is $20,000 per person / $40,000 per accident. If you are responsible for paying for someone’s injury because of an at fault accident how far do you think $20,000 would go? After the $20,000 is paid out the bills go to you. (ouch!)
You are not required to purchase the LDW - Loss Damage Waiver but then you are responsible for any damage to the vehicle, If the car is stolen you will be buying them a new car. However you might want to check your credit card they may offer some limited coverage (but don’t forget to use that card when you are renting the car)

This is usually included with the payment plan for your rental car. Most car rental places are required to have car insurance for their rentals because THEY own the vehicle. So basically auto insurance works like this: If you OWN the vehicle you are responsible to have auto insurance. If you want a tag on a car you have to have auto insurance FIRST. So if the car you rent has a tag on it already, then it is insured through that car rental company. If you have to put a tag on the car (which is unusual) you have to get your own auto insurance. The DMV will tell you this. Just try to get a car tag without insurance.
