Car Insurance for the newly retired. Do insurance companies take account of drivers of company cars ?

Sophia B asked:

I have been driving for about 44 years and have had a company car for the last 20 or so. When I retire, will an insurance company take account of this with no-claims discount for a car of my own?

You will not get a “No Claims” discount because you didn’t have private insurance and the company’s insurance paid any claims. They will look at your driving record and will determine the rate based on your driving record.

When my father retired some 20 years ago, he had the same issue. He spoke to an insurance company and was told that if he could get a letter from either his fleet administrator or company car insurance provider, stating that he had had no “at fault” accidents and how long he had been driving a company car, he would get full no claims discount.
As I say, that is some 20 years ago, so things may have changed, although the same thing happened to a former manager of mine approx 3 years ago when he retired.
Its got to be worth a phone call.

Try to look for comparison sites for car insurance companies. It will help you to find the most reliable and cheapest car insurance provider.

This will depend on whether or not you were listed as a driver on the company’s policy. If you were then their insurer can provide you with an experience letter saying you were accident free for the past ‘x’ number of years. almost any insurer would accept this as proof of being claims free. If you were not listed as a driver then it gets a bit tricky. At this point you should contact a local insurance broker who can negotiate with their underwriter on what the best way (if there is a way) to prove you were claims free.

You can ask your ex employer for a letter saying that you have have driven their vehicles for x years without a claim, which should go towards a few extrs years NCB form your insurance.

A site I’ve used to compare quotes in the past …

    Good Luck.
